ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

PREMIERSHIP CONFIRMED

The nation’s optimism surged overnight after the New Zealand Warriors opened their season with a convincing 42–18 win over the Sydney Roosters, triggering an avalanche of “Our Year” declarations across social media, like many other years.

Within minutes of the final whistle at Go Media Stadium, thousands of Warriors fans took to Facebook, X, Instagram, and the comment sections of news articles to confidently predict a premiership for the Warriors, despite the sample size of exactly one game.”

Our reporters didn’t have to search very far on social media before they found a barrage of posts with enthusiastic supporters of the ‘wazzas’.

“It’s our year!! Up the Warriors #letsgonewarriors” tweeted one fan.

“The Warriors are back! It’s definitely our year! Up the Wahs!” Brayden Casey commented on the Warriors Facebook page.

“80 minute performance! Chanel Harris-Tavita’s gonna take us all the way! Our year!” another commented, followed by hundreds more along similar lines.

“Look, the numbers don’t lie,” said local fan Darren Wills, attaching a screenshot of the ladder with the Warriors near the top. “We’re undefeated this season. Forty-two points. Dominant performance. If you extrapolate that across the year, that’s roughly… well… heaps of wins.”

Meanwhile, Warriors supporters across the country were urged to remain calm and avoid making overly bold predictions about their premiership until round two is over.

More to come.

EARLY ANALYSIS

A Hamilton man has confirmed he will interpret the first game of the season as definitive proof that it is either “our year” or simply “early days.”

Lifelong Warriors supporter Mike Patterson said the emotional range is well rehearsed. “If we win against the Roosters in two weeks time in round one, that’s it. Our year,” Patterson explained. “You can just feel it.”

However he confirmed a loss would not be at all concerning. “First round means nothing. Early days. Building combinations.”

Patterson said the framework has served him well in the past. “Look you can’t afford to panic, you just have to assess the situation objectively. Then you commit fully to optimism.”

Partner Sarah Bennett said she has observed the cycle annually.

“He’s either booking finals tickets or explaining long term strategy by 9.30pm,” Bennett said.

Patterson insists this season feels different, saying things like “the boys look sharp” and “the new signings are solid.”

Asked what would happen after a heavy defeat, Patterson remained calm.

“Still early. Always early.”

More to come.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT | Sport

QUEENSLANDER

A Hamilton man who has proudly “bled maroon” since intermediate has confirmed he will finally attend a State of Origin match in person, following the announcement that Eden Park will host a game in 2027.

Jason Rudd, 35, says the opportunity feels like destiny, despite having never visited Queensland or attended a live Origin fixture.

“I’ve always just connected with Queensland,” said Rudd, adjusting a faded Maroons cap purchased online in 2014. “It’s a mentality thing. Grit. Hard work. Humility. That’s me.”

Rudd began talking to reporters after quickly re-watching a highlights package on YouTube from the 2006 series.

“Everyone at school went for the Blues because it was easy,” he said. “I just thought nah, I’m different. I stand for something.”

The Hamilton sales rep has since built what he describes as “a strong Queensland culture” within his household, including a framed Cameron Smith poster in the spare room and a strict “no blue allowed” rule on Origin night.

“I’ve never actually been to Queensland,” Rudd confirmed. “Cairns looks good though. One day.”

Long-time mate and committed Warriors supporter Matt Keegan says Rudd’s dedication has always been impressive, yet confusing.

“He couldn’t name three suburbs in Brisbane,” Keegan said. “But he’ll give you a ten minute speech on Queensland spirit after two beers.”

Rudd believes Eden Park hosting a game in 2027 validates years of emotional investment.

“It just proves the Maroons are global,” he said. “They’ve finally brought it home.”

Rudd has apparently made a note in his calendar to book annual leave for the Thursday hangover he will be inflicting upon himself.

More to come.

BANDWAGON

An Auckland bloke has reportedly discovered a lifelong passion for the Melbourne Storm despite a glaring lack of connection to Melbourne, the Storm, or professional rugby league in general.

Chad Wilkes, 29, who has only ever set foot in Australia twice, both times on holiday to see the sights, has announced, with the fervor of a born-and-bred supporter, that he has “always” been a diehard Storm fan.

“I’ve always been backing the Storm,” the fairweather Warriors fan told friends while adjusting his newly purchased Storm jersey, still with tags attached.

“Brisbane has a good team, but they won’t beat my Melbourne Storm, not with Jahrome Hughes in the halves,” said Wilkes, who only ever seems to support the Storm in September and October.

With a handful of Kiwis playing on both sides in Sunday’s NRL Grand Final, Wilkes is determined to cheer loudly for Melbourne, leaving no doubt about his “lifelong” loyalty.

“To be honest even when the Warriors were on, my heart was always with the Melbourne Storm. Always.”

More to come.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT | Sport

OPPORTUNITY MISSED

A Warriors fan’s absolutely world-class reaction to their match-winning try over the Newcastle Knights is being described by those who witnessed it as “borderline legendary” and tragically, completely unrecorded.

The unfilmed performance took place in the lounge of die-hard Wahs supporter 29-year-old Dylan Huia from Lower Hutt, just seconds after Warriors forward Leka Halasima dived over in a last gasp effort to win the game 20-15 after the siren.

“He just erupted,” said flatmate Ben Foster, who witnessed the event in person but inexplicably failed to hit record on his phone. “He jumped up, screamed, did like three fist pumps, booted a cushion across the lounge and collapsed in a crying heap on the bean bag. It was cinematic.”

“It would’ve gone nuts on TikTok,” he added regretfully.

Huia himself says he’s gutted his moment of raw, visceral, masculine joy has now vanished into the ether, never to be shared with the internet or made into a meme.

“Honestly, I’ve never reacted like that to anything. It was just pure instinct. I felt the mana of every Whetu and Stacey and Manu in history pass through me,” he said, still buzzing.

“Then I turned around and realised no one had filmed it. Flat out disgrace.”

The miss is particularly painful in light of several now-viral fan videos showing other Warriors fans, including Shaun Johnson himself, losing their minds across the country.

“Mine was better than all of them,” claimed Huia, who is now forced to rely on word-of-mouth and badly re-enacted demonstrations to preserve the memory.

“I even did a knee slide,” he added.

The group have since agreed to keep phones rolling for the rest of the season — just in case history repeats itself and Dylan delivers another unseen masterpiece.

More to come.

KIWISLANDER

Jason Wiggins, 34, has once again reminded everyone in the group chat that he “bleeds maroon”, despite living his entire life in suburban Christchurch, never actually going to Australia, let alone Queensland.

“I’ve been backing Queensland since I was a kid,” said Wiggins, proudly wearing a well worn Maroons jersey and watching glory years highlights of the Maroons.

Queensland find themselves in a must win State of Origin 2 game against the NSW Blues in Perth and nobody is more amped up for it than a South Island Kiwi who has next to zero connection to NSW or Qld, let alone Australia.

“You don’t have to be from Queensland to understand Queensland. That’s the thing people don’t get,” he explained. “It’s not about postcodes, it’s about passion. Loyalty. Mateship. And hating New South Wales to be honest.”

“If Kalyn Ponga can be a Kiwi and represent Queensland, then I sure as hell can support them from the South Island in New Zealand.”

As our reporters tried to quiz him more on his dedication he was just standing in his living room yelling “Queenslander!”

COUCH COMA

Jackson Brownie, a 32 year-old tradie from Hamilton has once again grossly overestimated his capacity to stay awake past 10pm on a weeknight.

Brownie — who was on the tools since 5:30 am, is expected to nod off sometime during the first half of the Queensland vs NSW rugby league game this evening, likely to be exhausted by a day’s work and the lengthy build up to Origin with Gus Gould.

“Every year I get myself all jacked up for it and look forward to watching the opening game, maybe even watch a bit of the post-match analysis,” said Brownie, while sprawled on his La-Z-Boy with a weighted blanket.

“But by the time they finish belting out Advance Australia Fair and showing shots of the sold out crowd, I’m usually drooling on the armrest. Man, why do they make these kick offs so bloody late?” asked Brownie, yawning and struggling to pay attention.

With the match kicking off at 10:05 pm NZT on a weeknight, which is often delayed until about 10:20 pm once the anthem is done, it is no wonder Brownie and many Kiwis can’t stay awake until the first half is over.

Brownie, who had earlier changed into his maroon jersey and posted “Up the Maroons” to his Instagram story with the fire emoji, is now believed to be “at extreme risk of early snoozing” after a roast dinner and two Export Golds, struggling to coherently answer any more questions from the Whakataki Times.

More to come.

LIGHTS OUT

A new combat sport known as RUNIT is currently sweeping social media and hospital emergency rooms alike.

Two rivals — a fearless ball runner and a determined tackler — line up at opposite ends of a narrow 20m by 4m battlefield. Then, like human missiles, they charge headlong at each other, each aiming to knock the other flat on their back.

But amid the chaos, one question has dominated the conversation: What if one of the RUNIT contestants had to run it straight at Bulldogs-era SBW?

According to the Whakataki Institute of Contact Sport Studies, the answer is simple:
“They’d disintegrate.”

“Sonny Bill Williams in his Bulldogs prime was not a human man. He was a heavily moisturised battering ram with the most dominant shoulder charge ever seen in the game,” said lead researcher Dr. Matiu Heke.

“The shoulder charge was legal, he was 110kg of Polynesian marble, and he’d hit you so hard your future kids would wake up dizzy.” he said, bringing up footage of primetime SBW playing for the Bulldogs between 2004-2008.

The new RUNIT championship is offering $20,000 to the toughest of 16 competitors at Trusts Arena this week, with the winner of the finals taking home $200,000. But most fans online say the prize isn’t worth the risk — especially if someone unfreezes Sonny from his prime era and throws him in the draw.

More to come.

OUR YEAR

Warriors fan Sean Fraser, 32, from Auckland has spent the better part of Sunday morning refreshing the Air New Zealand website looking at flights to Sydney in early October.

“Second on the ladder and 10 rounds into the season? I haven’t felt this kind of confidence since the golden Stacey Jones era.” Fraser said with excitement as it is indeed the Warriors’ best start to an NRL season since 2002.

Last night’s nerve-shattering 15–14 win over the Dragons, sealed by a clutch 69th-minute field goal from Luke Metcalf, has sent a ripple of unearned certainty through Warriors Nation — a fanbase famously allergic to consistency, but dangerously addicted to hope.

“At this stage they’re basically guaranteed to make the top eight, I think this is the year they’ll get us all the way to the big dance. Metcalf will guide us home.” said Fraser, who was now actually booking his flight to Sydney.

“I know we’ve been burned before,” admitted Fraser, nervously checking for flight cancellation fees.

“But this feels different. Like, I don’t want to jinx it… but also I’ve cleared my calendar for early October. Come on, up the Wahs. This is our year!!”

More to come.

DEJA VU

Keegan Bradley, 31, is asking his mates to please calm down about the Warriors’ position on the NRL ladder — despite a gutsy third-straight win that’s seen the club surge into the second place spot.

“Yes, they won. Yes, it was brave. But we’ve seen this movie before, haven’t we?” Keegan said, pacing around his living room after the Warriors nail biting 30-26 win in Brisbane last night.

The Warriors were at one point up 30-12 before doing everything in their power to blow it, scoring only a penalty goal in the second half, as the Cowboys came roaring back into the game.

“I mean, how do you almost lose after being up by 18 points? That takes real commitment.”

While many fans were quick to label the Warriors a “serious premiership threat” and many fans now boldly claiming again it’s “our year”. Bradley wasn’t so sure.

“How many seasons have we had where we start hot and finish 11th, with a points differential of minus 94?”

“I’m not saying I’m not happy — I’m happy. But I feel like I’m waiting for the inevitable. Geez there’s such a long way to go.”

More to come.
