Crusaders fans are eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s match against the Blues in Christchurch after reports emerged that the iconic horses are set to return to matchday duties. This was despite previously being “forced into early retirement” by the management at One New Zealand Stadium.

Last month, the club announced the famous horses would no longer feature at games due to safety concerns surrounding the tight layout of the new stadium and they were not present two weeks ago at the opening round.

However, scenes of horses galloping around the stadium yesterday have reignited hope ahead of the Crusaders clash against the Blues.

But while fans welcomed the apparent return of the horses, many say another matchday fixture must now also become permanent: Christchurch rapper Scribe.

The local hip hop icon stunned a sold-out Super Round crowd earlier this season after appearing at halftime, with thousands of Cantabs temporarily forgetting they were attending rugby, and instead entering what a witness called “a deeply emotional 2003 fever dream.”

“I’m happy the horses are back,” said Spreydon man Jase Wilson, 41, wrapped in a Crusaders flag while aggressively singing Not Many outside the stadium. “But if Scribe doesn’t walk out before kickoff yelling ‘Christchurch City! Congratulations, you made it’, then honestly what are we even doing here?”

Fans say the combination of medieval crusader horses and kiwi hip hop from the early-2000s has somehow become the perfect representation of modern Christchurch culture.

“It just works,” said Wilson. “You’ve got the horses, the Crusaders theme song, then suddenly Scribe appears as well and you can’t think you’re anything but definitely a one-eyed Cantab.

“Even makes me want to try and find out what Savage is up to”.

The Crusaders organisation has yet to confirm whether Scribe will become a regular fixture alongside the horses, although insiders say club officials are exploring a compromise where the rapper performs from horseback during major finals matches.

EQUINE POTENTIAL

Wellington’s Sky Stadium has come under fresh scrutiny this week, with observers noting the venue appears “exceptionally well configured” for horse-based entertainment should the Hurricanes wish to explore that option.

The comments come as the Crusaders prepare to debut at One NZ Stadium, a modern facility that notably lacks provisions for their traditional mounted horsemen, angering some Cantabrians.

Wellington sports enthusiast Daniel Prentice says the Cake Tin’s wide, circular design makes it “basically perfect” for horses.

“You look at it and just think, yeah, you could easily get a few ponies running through there,” said Prentice, gesturing vaguely toward the stadium’s outer concourse.

“There’s a lot of room. More than Lancaster Park ever had. You could probably double the horses and still have plenty of space for them to open the gait a bit,”

Another fan, Katrina Hughes, agreed the layout felt “underutilised” in its current form.

“It’s very round, which horses seem to like,” she said.

“They wouldn’t feel boxed in. It’s quite open, quite freeing. Feels like something you’d want to lean into from a fan experience point of view”

Sources close to the Hurricanes confirm early discussions have taken place around the possibility of introducing horses into matchday experiences, although branding challenges remain.

“One of the key questions is whether hurricanes actually have anything to do with horses,” said a person familiar with the conversations.

“It would be good if they did. But at the moment it doesn’t look like it.”

Brand consultant Mark Ellery said the idea was “not without its complications,” but believed it had merit.

“There’s definitely a gap in the market for more horses in rugby,” he said.

“If we can find even a loose conceptual link between weather systems and horses, then you’ve got something to work with.”

No formal proposal has been submitted yet, though insiders say the stadium’s “clear equine readiness” has not gone unnoticed.

METEOROLOGICAL SABOTAGE.

Travelling Blues fans are once again looking to the skies for excuses as their team prepares to play the Hurricanes in New Zealand’s only cake-shaped stadium.

“I swear it’s the design of it, aye,” says passionate Blues fan Andrew, who’s travelled down for this weekend’s clash at Hnry Stadium (formerly Sky Stadium, formerly Wellington Regional Stadium, formerly just “Westpac”). 

Donning a KFC bucket hat and Blues jersey over fifteen additional layers to keep warm outside of Auckland’s “all-year summer weather,” Andrew tells us he has evidence to prove his claim isn’t just “a bullshit excuse.”

“My mate’s mum works at MetService and he swears she’s seen Jordie and Clarky (Laidlaw) up there just the other day. I swear they were conspiring to adjust the wind so Beaudy can’t get his signature bombs up.”

Reminded about the fact that Beauden Barrett was in fact once a Hurricane player himself, Andrew responded with: “well, you know Auckland changes you aye – the only wind we get is when a real estate agent sighs at a damp two-bedroom unit in Remuera only selling for three million.”

Andrew’s theory became even stranger as he began talking about Hurricanes management “negotiating with Cyclone Vaianu”. While the rest of the Pacific treats the tropical low as a weather event, Andrew seems convinced the Canes have signed the cyclone to a one-week development contract.

“It’s suspicious, isn’t it?” Andrew whispered, sheltering his oat flat white from a rogue gust. “Vaianu just happens to turn up the same week the Blues arrive? It’s basically a tactical sub. I think we all know by now that somebody’s controlling the weather. They’re bringing in 150km/h winds just to ruffle us. It’s unsportsmanlike, and King Carlos himself would’ve never stood for it!”

Locals have also responded in kind. Long-time Wellington resident and Hurricanes season-ticket holder, Baz, was less than sympathetic while leaning into a 45-degree gust.

“Bless ‘em,” Baz shouted over the roar of a bin being blown down Manners Street. “They come down here with their ‘tactical kicking’ and their ‘structured play’ thinking it’ll hold up in conditions they haven’t seen since that ‘brutal’ 8.2 degree high day in 2011.

The Blues have reportedly requested the match be moved to a more “equitable” environment, such as a heated yoga studio in Ponsonby, or at the very least, that the Hurricanes be prohibited from using the southerly “as their 16th man.”

Andrew was last seen trying to staple his KFC bucket hat to his forehead, while Baz was seen comfortably eating a mince and cheese pie in a sideways downpour, unaware that his umbrella had turned inside out three suburbs ago.

An 11-year-old boy has reportedly dismissed one of rugby’s most legendary figures as “clearly fake” and “AI” after stumbling across highlight footage of Jonah Lomu on YouTube.

Jaxon Webb, a Year 7 student who describes himself as “pretty onto it with AI stuff,” said the clips looked “way too unrealistic to be real human gameplay.”

“I mean, I’ve seen some big runs in rugby in Super Rugby” said Webb, pausing mid-scroll. “But there’s no way someone that size is running that fast and just bowling people over like NPCs. That’s AI, 100%.”

Webb’s skepticism peaked after viewing footage from the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where Lomu famously steamrolled England defender Mike Catt.

“There’s literally a clip where he just runs straight over this dude,” Webb said. “Like, fully flattens him. No sidestep, no nothing. Just deletes him. That doesn’t happen in real life. That’s generated content.”

Jaxon’s mother, Karen Webb, said she wasn’t surprised by her son’s conclusion, admitting she may have contributed to his confusion after repeatedly warning him about the dangers of the internet.

“I always tell him, ‘Don’t believe everything you see online, there’s AI everywhere now,’” she explained. “I didn’t think he’d apply that logic to actual history, but here we are.”

Despite her attempts to clarify that Lomu was, in fact, a real person who terrorised defences for the All Blacks in the 90s and early 2000s, Jaxon remains unconvinced.

“If he was real, why haven’t we seen anyone like him since?” he argued. “Like, where are the other Jonahs? You can’t just have one guy built like that. It doesn’t add up.”

Meanwhile, historians are reportedly bracing for further claims that the All Blacks’ dominance in the 90s was “scripted,” and that VHS tapes may soon be dismissed as “early deepfakes.”

At the time of publication, Jaxon had moved on to watching clips of Christian Cullen, but confirmed he was “keeping an eye out for glitches.”

“JUST WHEREVER THE TEAM NEEDS ME”

Ahead of the All Blacks first test against France this weekend, Beauden Barrett has once again fronted media with the steely poise of a man who knows exactly what to say.

Barrett was doing his regular standup in Dunedin where reporters asked the first-five-fullback-general-utility-back about where he thinks he’ll slot into Scott Robertson’s matchday squad. 

“Ah yeah, just wherever the team needs me really,” Barrett said with a smile so non-committal it could be used as a stock image titled “neutral reaction”. 

“Just happy to do what’s best for the team to be honest, whether that’s at 10, 15 or even off the bench,” he explained with a carefully rehearsed grin that he’d been practising at the hotel this morning.

The question of whether Barrett should be starting at first-five or fullback has become a seasonal tradition in New Zealand, so it’s not surprising the veteran All Black has been rehearsing his answers with the smile of a Cheshire cat.

When quizzed on the form of Damian McKenzie, Barrett was quick to squash any headline-worthy remarks.

“Yeah, look, he’s played well this year hasn’t he?” he smiled. “You saw what he did with the Chiefs. But yeah, like I said before, just happy to slot in wherever the team needs me.

“I mean, I’ve played a lot at 10 over the years, and had some decent moments there,” he said. “But fullback is a great position too. Lots of space. Bit more grass in front of me. Either way, just stoked to be part of the squad and will play wherever Razor needs me,” Barrett concluded, finishing off the media session with another smile that projected an air of being unfazed either way.

FOREGONE CONCLUSION

The TAB has officially scrapped the option to bet on the Crusaders winning the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific final this Saturday — citing the result as “pre-determined” and therefore not a gamble worth taking.

The Crusaders, who face off against the Chiefs in Christchurch, boast a staggering home playoff record: 31 wins from 31 games, which is extremely unlikely to change come the final whistle after 80 minutes.

TAB spokesman Mark Goldstein explained the decision with a mix of amusement and resignation

“We love a good underdog story as much as anyone,” Goldstein said, “but the Crusaders’ home playoff record is basically the sporting equivalent of gravity — you can’t argue with it, you can’t bet against it, and frankly, it’s not really fun for anyone except their fans.”

Goldstein added, “Offering odds on the Crusaders to win at home is like selling insurance on whether the sun will rise tomorrow. It’s a predetermined outcome. We tried to crunch the numbers, ran all the algorithms, and every path led to a Crusaders win. So, for the sake of our sanity — and our wallets — we’ve removed that betting option.”

Chiefs fans, meanwhile, are reportedly considering alternate plans for Saturday night, including accepting defeat gracefully and just hoping their team loses with dignity. 

Meanwhile, TAB punters are advised to look elsewhere if they’re after a flutter with genuine uncertainty.
