ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

PREMIERSHIP CONFIRMED

The nation’s optimism surged overnight after the New Zealand Warriors opened their season with a convincing 42–18 win over the Sydney Roosters, triggering an avalanche of “Our Year” declarations across social media, like many other years.

Within minutes of the final whistle at Go Media Stadium, thousands of Warriors fans took to Facebook, X, Instagram, and the comment sections of news articles to confidently predict a premiership for the Warriors, despite the sample size of exactly one game.”

Our reporters didn’t have to search very far on social media before they found a barrage of posts with enthusiastic supporters of the ‘wazzas’.

“It’s our year!! Up the Warriors #letsgonewarriors” tweeted one fan.

“The Warriors are back! It’s definitely our year! Up the Wahs!” Brayden Casey commented on the Warriors Facebook page.

“80 minute performance! Chanel Harris-Tavita’s gonna take us all the way! Our year!” another commented, followed by hundreds more along similar lines.

“Look, the numbers don’t lie,” said local fan Darren Wills, attaching a screenshot of the ladder with the Warriors near the top. “We’re undefeated this season. Forty-two points. Dominant performance. If you extrapolate that across the year, that’s roughly… well… heaps of wins.”

Meanwhile, Warriors supporters across the country were urged to remain calm and avoid making overly bold predictions about their premiership until round two is over.

More to come.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT | Sport

EARLY ANALYSIS

A Hamilton man has confirmed he will interpret the first game of the season as definitive proof that it is either “our year” or simply “early days.”

Lifelong Warriors supporter Mike Patterson said the emotional range is well rehearsed. “If we win against the Roosters in two weeks time in round one, that’s it. Our year,” Patterson explained. “You can just feel it.”

However he confirmed a loss would not be at all concerning. “First round means nothing. Early days. Building combinations.”

Patterson said the framework has served him well in the past. “Look you can’t afford to panic, you just have to assess the situation objectively. Then you commit fully to optimism.”

Partner Sarah Bennett said she has observed the cycle annually.

“He’s either booking finals tickets or explaining long term strategy by 9.30pm,” Bennett said.

Patterson insists this season feels different, saying things like “the boys look sharp” and “the new signings are solid.”

Asked what would happen after a heavy defeat, Patterson remained calm.

“Still early. Always early.”

More to come.
