ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

STATUS SHIFT

For years, the football world operated under the assumption that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the gravitational centre of attention, pulling the lions’ share of headlines into their orbit.

That theory was challenged this week after both icons were seen quietly circulating a World Cup promo event that was described as “clear proximity-seeking behaviour” around New Zealand defender Tim Payne..

Payne, whose social media following has exploded thanks to an Argentine influencer’s campaign, arrived at a World Cup event to find the two football legends seemingly waiting nearby.

Witnesses say Ronaldo repeatedly positioned himself in the background of photos Payne was taking with fans.

Messi reportedly employed a more subtle strategy, standing close enough to Payne that followers scrolling Instagram might spot him.

Speaking to reporters, Ronaldo denied he was chasing clout.

“Look, Tim is obviously having a moment,” he explained.

“I’m not saying I’d like a collaboration or maybe a tagged post, but if he wanted to do something together I’d certainly be open to discussing it.”

Messi also played down suggestions he was trying to ride Payne’s wave of popularity.

“I’ve achieved a few things in football,” he said.

“But when somebody has over three million followers appear overnight, you pay attention. That’s the sort of growth people dream about.” said the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

For his part, Payne, in classic kiwi fashion saw the two megastars, turned to a team mate and said “do you see who that is?” but was then too shy to approach either of them.

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

NO PAYNE NO GAIN

After accidentally becoming the most famous footballer in the country and possibly world overnight, All Whites defender Tim Payne is reportedly now under “crippling international pressure” to continue posting Instagram content despite previously only using the app to upload the odd photo of him playing for the Wellington Phoenix and All Whites.

Payne has exploded from 4,700 followers to over one million in just 48 hours after Argentine influencer El Scarso launched a campaign encouraging football fans to make Payne the “hero” of the FIFA World Cup due to him having the smallest social media following at the tournament.

Payne’s account has now allegedly spiralled into a non-stop content production nightmare.

“People are expecting daily Instagram stories and reels. But gee, I’ve never posted an Insta story and only posted the odd pic of me playing for the Phoenix,” Payne explained, as 50,000 more followers instantly rolled in.

The fullback now has the biggest social media following of any New Zealand football-related account, dwarfing even All Whites captain Chris Wood, who has a comparatively humiliating 162,000 followers.

Meanwhile, the official All Whites, Wellington Phoenix, and Auckland FC accounts are reportedly considering posting thirst traps to stay relevant.

Payne is now apparently frantically filming “a day in the life of Tim Payne” to keep his followers interested and many wannabe influencers and creators are absolutely spewing at his sudden stardom.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

BITTER REALITY

New Zealanders woke up this morning to the grim reality that Auckland FC have somehow already won the A-League title in just their second season, giving the rest of the country yet another reason to resent the nation’s largest city.

The Auckland side defeated Sydney FC 1-0 in front of a sold out Mount Smart crowd last night, affirming many Aucklanders’ belief that they’re better than the rest of New Zealand. The win sparked immediate celebrations across Auckland and immediate bitterness literally everywhere else, especially for Wellington Phoenix supporters.

As thousands of fans poured out of the stadium singing, waving scarves and uploading Instagram stories captioned “CITY OF CHAMPIONS”, residents outside Auckland reportedly felt physically ill.

“Mate honestly, they didn’t need this,” said Wellington man Jason Reilly, staring blankly into a flat white this morning. “They’ve already got the jobs, the concerts, the expensive houses, the media attention and the opinion that they’re the centre of the universe. Did they really need a football dynasty too? Plus the Warriors are actually going decent, although they’re more of a national team.”

The victory caps off a meteoric rise for Auckland FC, who entered the A-League in 2024 and have already managed to win a title before most New Zealanders had fully processed the club’s existence.

“There’s always been underlying resentment toward Auckland,” explained AUT sociologist Dr Hayden Moore. “But seeing them win a championship this quickly has accelerated things dramatically. For many New Zealanders, this feels personal.”

“There is a measurable psychological effect in Wellington right now known as ‘yeah, of course they did’ fatigue. It’s not clinically recognised yet, but it’s definitely real.”

More to come.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT | Sport

UNBEATABLE ON A GOOD DAY

With the doom and gloom around the capital cemented firmly in place, thanks in part to generous media coverage about lots of cafes closing, it would appear rugby union is back on the menu for Wellingtonians.

The Hurricanes Super Rugby team are top of the table with only three rounds to go, leaving many wondering “are the canes actually the only good thing about Wellington these days?”

While the players will be focused firmly on their games ahead, their main contenders in the “good things about Wellington” rankings are currently Te Papa, the cable car and for some strange reason the bucket fountain on Cuba Street.

An outside chance for the title is Weta Workshops, which some describe as a memorial site for a film series that came out over twenty years ago.

Wellington City Council refused to give an interview to the Whakataki Times, instead issuing a statement saying it is wonderful to see the Hurricanes playing well, but that there are “lots of other good things about Wellington so what is this story actually about?”.

The communications team at the Hurricanes was also relatively tight lipped, issuing the following statement that could be attributed to any of the current players: “We are just taking it one game at a time and staying focused on this week’s match against the Blues”.

However local man David Anderson, 52, was totally open about his delight at the way the Hurricanes have played this year, along with his visceral hatred of the bucket fountain.

“It’s just so pleasing to see the Hurricanes playing well. Cam Roigard is a revelation and I think Ruben Love is going to be the next big thing for the All Blacks,” he said when asked on Cuba Street this morning.

“But aside from that, can I just say how much I hate this ridiculous fountain? It’s ugly, it splashes water on the pavers making the ground slippery, it doesn’t look at all iconic… and is it even a fountain?”

Mr Anderson said that even walking past “all those people on Manners Street” isn’t that bad anymore because the Hurricanes are winning.

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

SELECTION STANDOFF

NZ Rugby has confirmed that 56-test All Black Richie Mo’unga will remain ineligible for national selection until he completes what officials describe as “the sacred rite of NPC participation.”

The decision means Mo’unga must first return to play for Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship , a competition NZ Rugby now considers the “true final exam of elite readiness.”

“Test rugby and multiple Super Rugby titles are one thing,” explained NZ Rugby CEO Steve Lancaster. “But has he done it on a cold Friday night in Invercargill with 4,200 people watching? I don’t think so, and we need to see that from him first.” Lancaster confirmed, despite Mo’unga winning nearly every competition he’s competed in during the past decade.

Despite Mo’unga already being contracted to NZ Rugby with Canterbury and the Crusaders, the rule ensures he must trundle out for Canterbury in the NPC first, which will then catapult him back into the frame for AB’s selection.

All Blacks coach Dave Rennie was blunt when asked about the situation.

“If selection was purely about current ability, he’d be in my squad,” Rennie said. “But NZ Rugby’s introduced a new weird layer where you have to prove you can survive NPC rugby for a couple of games before being considered for the black jersey. He’s contracted to NZ Rugby as well for crying out loud!”

“In most countries, if you’ve mastered international rugby, you don’t get sent back to do regional exams,” Rennie continued to explain. “But here we are effectively saying: ‘Yes, you’ve done it at the highest level many times before, but have you tried doing it against North Harbour in drizzle? It’s a bit of a virtue signalling exercise if you ask me.”

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

HERITAGE RESTORED

Crusaders fans are eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s match against the Blues in Christchurch after reports emerged that the iconic horses are set to return to matchday duties. This was despite previously being “forced into early retirement” by the management at One New Zealand Stadium.

Last month, the club announced the famous horses would no longer feature at games due to safety concerns surrounding the tight layout of the new stadium and they were not present two weeks ago at the opening round.

However, scenes of horses galloping around the stadium yesterday have reignited hope ahead of the Crusaders clash against the Blues.

But while fans welcomed the apparent return of the horses, many say another matchday fixture must now also become permanent: Christchurch rapper Scribe.

The local hip hop icon stunned a sold-out Super Round crowd earlier this season after appearing at halftime, with thousands of Cantabs temporarily forgetting they were attending rugby, and instead entering what a witness called “a deeply emotional 2003 fever dream.”

“I’m happy the horses are back,” said Spreydon man Jase Wilson, 41, wrapped in a Crusaders flag while aggressively singing Not Many outside the stadium. “But if Scribe doesn’t walk out before kickoff yelling ‘Christchurch City! Congratulations, you made it’, then honestly what are we even doing here?”

Fans say the combination of medieval crusader horses and kiwi hip hop from the early-2000s has somehow become the perfect representation of modern Christchurch culture.

“It just works,” said Wilson. “You’ve got the horses, the Crusaders theme song, then suddenly Scribe appears as well and you can’t think you’re anything but definitely a one-eyed Cantab.

“Even makes me want to try and find out what Savage is up to”.

The Crusaders organisation has yet to confirm whether Scribe will become a regular fixture alongside the horses, although insiders say club officials are exploring a compromise where the rapper performs from horseback during major finals matches.

More to come.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT | Sport

EQUINE POTENTIAL

Wellington’s Sky Stadium has come under fresh scrutiny this week, with observers noting the venue appears “exceptionally well configured” for horse-based entertainment should the Hurricanes wish to explore that option.

The comments come as the Crusaders prepare to debut at One NZ Stadium, a modern facility that notably lacks provisions for their traditional mounted horsemen, angering some Cantabrians.

Wellington sports enthusiast Daniel Prentice says the Cake Tin’s wide, circular design makes it “basically perfect” for horses.

“You look at it and just think, yeah, you could easily get a few ponies running through there,” said Prentice, gesturing vaguely toward the stadium’s outer concourse.

“There’s a lot of room. More than Lancaster Park ever had. You could probably double the horses and still have plenty of space for them to open the gait a bit,”

Another fan, Katrina Hughes, agreed the layout felt “underutilised” in its current form.

“It’s very round, which horses seem to like,” she said.

“They wouldn’t feel boxed in. It’s quite open, quite freeing. Feels like something you’d want to lean into from a fan experience point of view”

Sources close to the Hurricanes confirm early discussions have taken place around the possibility of introducing horses into matchday experiences, although branding challenges remain.

“One of the key questions is whether hurricanes actually have anything to do with horses,” said a person familiar with the conversations.

“It would be good if they did. But at the moment it doesn’t look like it.”

Brand consultant Mark Ellery said the idea was “not without its complications,” but believed it had merit.

“There’s definitely a gap in the market for more horses in rugby,” he said.

“If we can find even a loose conceptual link between weather systems and horses, then you’ve got something to work with.”

No formal proposal has been submitted yet, though insiders say the stadium’s “clear equine readiness” has not gone unnoticed.

More to come.

NEIGH SAYERS

Craig Chamberlain from Shirley Christchurch, has launched what he’s calling a “full-scale, one-man protest” after learning the Crusaders will not allow horses at their new home ground, One NZ Stadium.

The decision, confirmed today due to “limited space” and “basic modern safety standards,” has rocked Chamberlain to his core, with the lifelong fan claiming the move has “completely derailed the emotional integrity of rugby.”

“You take away the horses, you may as well take away the whole bloody team,” Chamberlain fumed.

For more than 30 years, horses circling Lancaster Park and Addington Stadium have been a pre-match staple for diehard Crusaders fans. But with the move to the new indoor One New Zealand Stadium, the Crusaders confirmed the animals would be retired, citing concerns about space, safety, and the general unsuitability of horses for enclosed arenas.

Chamberlain, however, isn’t buying it.

“I didn’t stand in the cold for 30 years at Crusaders games just to end up watching a DJ and some LED lights. Bring back the horses. Go woke, go broke!”

In response, Chamberlain has vowed to personally replace the horses, committing to galloping “endless circles” around the stadium before kickoff with a Crusaders flag.

“If they won’t do it, I will,” he said, adjusting his well worn Crusaders jersey from the mid 1990s. I did four laps of the Riccarton Mall carpark yesterday. Nearly blacked out, but that’s the price of tradition. They got rid of the swords, but for goodness sake, don’t get rid of the horses!”

More to come.

SAM WHITAKER | Sport

METEOROLOGICAL SABOTAGE.

Travelling Blues fans are once again looking to the skies for excuses as their team prepares to play the Hurricanes in New Zealand’s only cake-shaped stadium.

“I swear it’s the design of it, aye,” says passionate Blues fan Andrew, who’s travelled down for this weekend’s clash at Hnry Stadium (formerly Sky Stadium, formerly Wellington Regional Stadium, formerly just “Westpac”).

Donning a KFC bucket hat and Blues jersey over fifteen additional layers to keep warm outside of Auckland’s “all-year summer weather,” Andrew tells us he has evidence to prove his claim isn’t just “a bullshit excuse.”

“My mate’s mum works at MetService and he swears she’s seen Jordie and Clarky (Laidlaw) up there just the other day. I swear they were conspiring to adjust the wind so Beaudy can’t get his signature bombs up.”

Reminded about the fact that Beauden Barrett was in fact once a Hurricane player himself, Andrew responded with: “well, you know Auckland changes you aye – the only wind we get is when a real estate agent sighs at a damp two-bedroom unit in Remuera only selling for three million.”

Andrew’s theory became even stranger as he began talking about Hurricanes management “negotiating with Cyclone Vaianu”. While the rest of the Pacific treats the tropical low as a weather event, Andrew seems convinced the Canes have signed the cyclone to a one-week development contract.

“It’s suspicious, isn’t it?” Andrew whispered, sheltering his oat flat white from a rogue gust. “Vaianu just happens to turn up the same week the Blues arrive? It’s basically a tactical sub. I think we all know by now that somebody’s controlling the weather. They’re bringing in 150km/h winds just to ruffle us. It’s unsportsmanlike, and King Carlos himself would’ve never stood for it!”

Locals have also responded in kind. Long-time Wellington resident and Hurricanes season-ticket holder, Baz, was less than sympathetic while leaning into a 45-degree gust.

“Bless ‘em,” Baz shouted over the roar of a bin being blown down Manners Street. “They come down here with their ‘tactical kicking’ and their ‘structured play’ thinking it’ll hold up in conditions they haven’t seen since that ‘brutal’ 8.2 degree high day in 2011.

The Blues have reportedly requested the match be moved to a more “equitable” environment, such as a heated yoga studio in Ponsonby, or at the very least, that the Hurricanes be prohibited from using the southerly “as their 16th man.”

Andrew was last seen trying to staple his KFC bucket hat to his forehead, while Baz was seen comfortably eating a mince and cheese pie in a sideways downpour, unaware that his umbrella had turned inside out three suburbs ago.

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

SO FAKE

An 11-year-old boy has reportedly dismissed one of rugby’s most legendary figures as “clearly fake” and “AI” after stumbling across highlight footage of Jonah Lomu on YouTube.

Jaxon Webb, a Year 7 student who describes himself as “pretty onto it with AI stuff,” said the clips looked “way too unrealistic to be real human gameplay.”

“I mean, I’ve seen some big runs in rugby in Super Rugby” said Webb, pausing mid-scroll. “But there’s no way someone that size is running that fast and just bowling people over like NPCs. That’s AI, 100%.”

Webb’s skepticism peaked after viewing footage from the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where Lomu famously steamrolled England defender Mike Catt.

“There’s literally a clip where he just runs straight over this dude,” Webb said. “Like, fully flattens him. No sidestep, no nothing. Just deletes him. That doesn’t happen in real life. That’s generated content.”

Jaxon’s mother, Karen Webb, said she wasn’t surprised by her son’s conclusion, admitting she may have contributed to his confusion after repeatedly warning him about the dangers of the internet.

“I always tell him, ‘Don’t believe everything you see online, there’s AI everywhere now,’” she explained. “I didn’t think he’d apply that logic to actual history, but here we are.”

Despite her attempts to clarify that Lomu was, in fact, a real person who terrorised defences for the All Blacks in the 90s and early 2000s, Jaxon remains unconvinced.

“If he was real, why haven’t we seen anyone like him since?” he argued. “Like, where are the other Jonahs? You can’t just have one guy built like that. It doesn’t add up.”

Meanwhile, historians are reportedly bracing for further claims that the All Blacks’ dominance in the 90s was “scripted,” and that VHS tapes may soon be dismissed as “early deepfakes.”

At the time of publication, Jaxon had moved on to watching clips of Christian Cullen, but confirmed he was “keeping an eye out for glitches.”

More to come.
