ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

PREMIERSHIP CONFIRMED

The nation’s optimism surged overnight after the New Zealand Warriors opened their season with a convincing 42–18 win over the Sydney Roosters, triggering an avalanche of “Our Year” declarations across social media, like many other years.

Within minutes of the final whistle at Go Media Stadium, thousands of Warriors fans took to Facebook, X, Instagram, and the comment sections of news articles to confidently predict a premiership for the Warriors, despite the sample size of exactly one game.”

Our reporters didn’t have to search very far on social media before they found a barrage of posts with enthusiastic supporters of the ‘wazzas’.

“It’s our year!! Up the Warriors #letsgonewarriors” tweeted one fan.

“The Warriors are back! It’s definitely our year! Up the Wahs!” Brayden Casey commented on the Warriors Facebook page.

“80 minute performance! Chanel Harris-Tavita’s gonna take us all the way! Our year!” another commented, followed by hundreds more along similar lines.

“Look, the numbers don’t lie,” said local fan Darren Wills, attaching a screenshot of the ladder with the Warriors near the top. “We’re undefeated this season. Forty-two points. Dominant performance. If you extrapolate that across the year, that’s roughly… well… heaps of wins.”

Meanwhile, Warriors supporters across the country were urged to remain calm and avoid making overly bold predictions about their premiership until round two is over.

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

SPEED RUCKING

The All Blacks have today announced Dave Rennie as the new Head Coach through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, replacing Scott Robertson who was sacked in January.

Today’s announcement however has left TV personality and former aspiring coach Leigh Hart questioning the selection process.

“I was ready to reinvent the ruck. But instead of going with someone innovative with a keen eye for strategy, like myself, they’ve gone with someone with more practical application, who’s actually coached a rugby team before,” said Hart, while rapidly cooking dinner for his children.

“This has been a disappointing day.”

Hart, who has long dreamed of leading the All Blacks, insists his approach would have brought “fresh energy, innovative thinking, and possibly a few pints to team strategy sessions.” Despite this, he remains philosophical.

“Coaching is about vision. I have vision. They have… well… Dave Rennie now,” he quipped.

“Apparently my backyard defensive bomb strategy doesn’t count as professional experience. Who knew? They don’t tell you these things when you apply,” Hart said, referencing how he can apply the defensive bomb to 17 unique scenarios.

“They gave the job to someone who knows what they’re doing. I thought NZR wanted bold ideas. Turns out they just want someone who has experience in coaching.”

“Maybe one day they’ll realise the genius of the defensive bomb,” Hart concluded.

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

FINAL CLEARANCE

Arthur Stanley, 73, remains on high alert at his usual table at his local watering hole in Shirley, Christchurch, patiently waiting for what he assumes is the inevitable phone call from NZ Rugby seeking his final approval on the next All Blacks coach.

“It’s a two-horse race,” Arthur confirmed confidently between sips. “Jamie Joseph or Dave Rennie. I’ve weighed it up, but I’ll wait till those goons at the New Zealand Rugby Union ring me. They may as well announce me as their CEO while they’re at it!” Stanley said, referencing the fact NZ Rugby still haven’t chosen a new CEO yet.

The central sporting body “sensationally sacked” Scott Robertson nearly two months ago and have taken their time thinking about who will replace him, with an announcement expected later this week.

“They’ll ring,” he said calmly, glancing at his phone on the sticky bar leaner. “They always leave it late. I’ll be ready when they ring though.”

“You don’t just rush these things,” Stanley explained, shaking his head at the television. “This is the All Blacks. Standards.”

Asked whether he was leaning toward Joseph or Rennie, Arthur paused for dramatic effect.

“I’ve made my decision,” he said. “But I’ll wait for the call before making it public. Wouldn’t want to undermine the process. But those clowns should hurry up and get on with it. We’ve got a World Cup next year.”

At press time, NZ Rugby had not yet confirmed whether they were aware of Arthur’s availability, though sources close to Stanley say he will remain at the Shirley pub “all afternoon, just in case.”

More to come.

EARLY ANALYSIS

A Hamilton man has confirmed he will interpret the first game of the season as definitive proof that it is either “our year” or simply “early days.”

Lifelong Warriors supporter Mike Patterson said the emotional range is well rehearsed. “If we win against the Roosters in two weeks time in round one, that’s it. Our year,” Patterson explained. “You can just feel it.”

However he confirmed a loss would not be at all concerning. “First round means nothing. Early days. Building combinations.”

Patterson said the framework has served him well in the past. “Look you can’t afford to panic, you just have to assess the situation objectively. Then you commit fully to optimism.”

Partner Sarah Bennett said she has observed the cycle annually.

“He’s either booking finals tickets or explaining long term strategy by 9.30pm,” Bennett said.

Patterson insists this season feels different, saying things like “the boys look sharp” and “the new signings are solid.”

Asked what would happen after a heavy defeat, Patterson remained calm.

“Still early. Always early.”

More to come.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT | Sport

QUEENSLANDER

A Hamilton man who has proudly “bled maroon” since intermediate has confirmed he will finally attend a State of Origin match in person, following the announcement that Eden Park will host a game in 2027.

Jason Rudd, 35, says the opportunity feels like destiny, despite having never visited Queensland or attended a live Origin fixture.

“I’ve always just connected with Queensland,” said Rudd, adjusting a faded Maroons cap purchased online in 2014. “It’s a mentality thing. Grit. Hard work. Humility. That’s me.”

Rudd began talking to reporters after quickly re-watching a highlights package on YouTube from the 2006 series.

“Everyone at school went for the Blues because it was easy,” he said. “I just thought nah, I’m different. I stand for something.”

The Hamilton sales rep has since built what he describes as “a strong Queensland culture” within his household, including a framed Cameron Smith poster in the spare room and a strict “no blue allowed” rule on Origin night.

“I’ve never actually been to Queensland,” Rudd confirmed. “Cairns looks good though. One day.”

Long-time mate and committed Warriors supporter Matt Keegan says Rudd’s dedication has always been impressive, yet confusing.

“He couldn’t name three suburbs in Brisbane,” Keegan said. “But he’ll give you a ten minute speech on Queensland spirit after two beers.”

Rudd believes Eden Park hosting a game in 2027 validates years of emotional investment.

“It just proves the Maroons are global,” he said. “They’ve finally brought it home.”

Rudd has apparently made a note in his calendar to book annual leave for the Thursday hangover he will be inflicting upon himself.

More to come.

COTTON-WOOLED CRYBABIES

Percy Wright, 72, longtime regular at the downtown pub in Oamaru, settled into his usual spot at the bar on a weekday to watch the Super Bowl in between horse races.

Armed with a pint of lager and decades of sporting wisdom, Wright did not hold back on his assessment of the American NFL spectacle.

“They’re too bloody soft,” he said, shaking his head as another commercial interrupted the game. “All that padding, all those helmets… back in my day, if you got hit, you’d tape yourself up and just get on with it!

“The players may as well be wearing bubble wrap! In rugby, a real man’s game, we got up with mud in our eyes and blood on our faces! That’s contact sport!”

Watching the ball disappear into yet another quarterback huddle, he muttered, “I’d be surprised if the ball was in play for more than five minutes in the whole game. Five bloody minutes of ball in play and the game takes five hours!”

When asked what he thought of the helmets directly, Wright scoffed. “Helmets? Back in my day, if you wanted to protect your head, you used a bit of common sense. Maybe a tough skull. That’s all you needed.”

By the end of the game, Percy had made it clear that NFL footballers could never compete if they tried rugby union. “Too bloody soft!” he concluded.

More to come.

ROSEMARY ABBOTT | Sport

EVERY YEAR

34-year-old Dave Hamlin, veteran grade cricketer and part-time keeper of excuses, has yet again failed to pay his $160 club fees for his third division cricket season.

The season, now winding down with only a few rounds remaining, has seen Hamlin turn up dutifully for practice, matches, and post-game beers, but apparently bank account unable to transfer his season’s subs.

Despite the looming deadline, Hamlin is calm. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll sort it tonight,” he said after training last week, as he handed over $20 for the pokies while sipping a freshly poured pint.

Teammates say this pattern is nothing new. “Honestly, we just assume Dave’s going to be last to pay every year,” said club captain Mark Reid. “It’s like clockwork. The only thing predictable about him is that his subs won’t be paid until the very last possible second.”

Another teammate, Simon Patel, added: “ He always says ‘tonight’… and somehow it turns into tomorrow, or the next week, or sometimes next season. I’m sick of telling him to hurry up and do it.”

Club treasurer Nigel Thompson said he’s come to terms with Dave’s late payment style. “We’ve learned to budget around the fact that Dave likely will be the last to pay his subs. Each time we pull out the final warning about how he won’t play until he pays, then he seems to come through.”

As the season edges closer to its finale, Hamlin remains confident but also coy. “I’ve got it covered,” he said with a grin. “Just give me one more week… maybe two.

More to come.

SLED AHEAD

Jarrod Kearney, 30, from Wellington, has officially declared what he insists the entire world has been missing: Hyrox. “I used to chase PRs on wall balls with CrossFit. Now I chase glory across 8 kilometers and eight brutal stations. Hyrox is what fitness was always meant to be.”

Fresh from competing at the Hyrox competition in Auckland over the weekend, which he let all of his friend groups know about by plastering it across his social media channels, Kearney now can’t stop talking about training for his next Hyrox competition and how it is the most elite level of fitness.

“It’s simple but brutal,” he said. “You run a kilometer, smash a workout station, repeat eight times. It tests your endurance, strength, and cardio. CrossFit doesn’t compare to this.

“I just want people to feel the same revelation I did,” Jarrod explained, slamming a sandbag onto the floor for emphasis. “CrossFit was fun, but it was a chaotic circus. Hyrox is fitness distilled—run, lift, repeat, repeat, repeat… eight times. You can’t fake it. You can’t cheat. You either do it, or you cry in the corner.”

Friends of Kearney have noticed the transformation. “He used to be insufferable when talking about CrossFit a decade ago” said a former gym buddy, who requested anonymity. “Now he’s just punishing us with all this Hyrox stuff. Honestly, it looks kinda similar. Just another cult really.”

Kearney himself acknowledges that Hyrox isn’t for everyone. “It’s definitely tough,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but that’s the point. It pushes you in a way nothing else does. CrossFit has its place, but Hyrox really makes you see what your body can do.”

More to come.

PUB FURY

Bernard “Bernie” Douglas, 72, has had a complete gutsful of the All Blacks coaching situation over the past week.

After Scott Robertson was sensationally sacked by NZ Rugby due to player feedback at the end of season review, Douglas has explained that if the AB’s actually just stopped being drama queens and focussed on tackling and winning test matches, then we wouldn’t have this situation.

“You don’t fire Razor, you fire half the support staff, give the players a ball, and tell ‘em to sort themselves out. If they can’t tackle a bloke who’s running at them like a charging bull, maybe rugby’s not the sport for them.” Bernie said, chugging back his third pint in a New Plymouth bar.

Bernie blamed the current situation on what he calls “over-sophisticated soft-football syndrome,” a crippling mix of excessive strategy meetings and too much “Bloody Tik-toking or whatever it’s called.” he said with his blood pressure rising.

“Back in my day, you didn’t need a sports psychologist, you needed a bloke beside you who could actually hold his own face steady while he made a tackle!”

As Bernie angrily ordered another drink he had one final word for our reporters.

“The All Blacks will keep spinning in circles until someone remembers that rugby is a game you play with your body, not your feelings. Stop whining about the coaching staff. Tackle properly. Win games. It’s not complicated.”

“And don’t get me started on what I think of the goons at NZ Rugby!”

More to come.

NEVER FORGET

In a shocking twist of national sentiment, many New Zealanders say they would consider welcoming former All Blacks coach John Mitchell back into the fold, but only if he first delivers a public apology for the sin that still haunts them: dropping Christian Cullen in 2003.

Mitchell, whose tenure as All Blacks coach ended in semi-final heartbreak at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, has been largely exiled from Kiwi rugby folklore after not selecting Cullen while still in his prime, leaving many still confused to this day about his non-selection.

The possibility of Mitchell being back in the All Blacks mix may be haunting for some, with the opportunity only arising after Scott “Razor Roberton” was sacked last week as head coach.

Some Kiwis have still not forgiven, but could be swayed.

“Nearly 23 years on and I’m still not over it,” said one unnamed bloke from Whakatāne, shaking his head. “If Mitchell wants the job back, he better start with a ‘sorry’ to every All Blacks fan in this country, especially to those who knew how good Cullen was. The bloke scored 46 All Blacks tries for goodness sake.”

Rugby commentators are cautiously optimistic about the idea. “If Mitchell wants to coach the All Blacks again, the first thing he needs is redemption,” said one former player turned pundit.

“Acknowledge the Cullen decision, show some humility. Maybe then people will let it go. Maybe. 23 years may be a long time ago, but some Cullen and All Blacks fans will never forget.”

More to come.
