HOT TOPIC
Wellington man Ben Mathison, 35, struck a chord this morning when he became passionately involved in the yearly debate over whether the action movie Die Hard is also a Christmas film or not.
Mathison, an MBIE-based analyst who appeared to care deeply about the topic, brought it up at his weekly team meeting, held on Microsoft Teams. His team mates joined in the debate enthusiastically, both on camera and via the chat, as Mathison vehemently argued that Die Hard is not a Christmas film.
“Just because a movie is set during Christmas time, does not mean that it’s a Christmas movie. The storyline could have happened at any time of the year. The fact that it was set at Christmas time was totally inconsequential to the plot of the film,” he recited on camera.
Team manager Kate jumped into the highly contentious topic, saying that Die Hard actually is a Christmas film.
“Yes, because it is set during Christmas, and everyone involved in the hostage situation is there because they were at a holiday party on Christmas Eve. Which means it is technically a Christmas movie,” she said.
“Plus it gets shown on TV at Christmas time every year, so it must be!”
While he disagreed with his manager, Mathison said he was pleased with the level of engagement shown by his team about this vital issue.
“Great to see strong buy-in on the age-old debate. I think I’ve put the matter to bed once and for all, but if I have to educate people again next year, then so be it.”
The issue was later put to a vote, however the results would not be made public due to widespread accusations of voter fraud.
More to come.
