SOMEBODY THINK OF THE KIWIS

Queensland supporter Mark Hickey, 33, is sitting down with his second cup of coffee tonight, preparing for the State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 10:05 PM NZT, though seasoned viewers like Mark know that 10:15 PM if not much later is a more realistic start time.

“It’s not like I’m asking for much,” Hickey lamented, pouring boiling water into his coffee mug which is usually reserved for the morning.”

“I just want to watch the State of Origin decider without feeling like a zombie at work the next day. Every year, it’s the same story,” Mark groaned, glancing at the clock.

“The game never starts on time. 10:05 PM, they say, but we all know it’s more like 10:15. By then, half of us are already drooling on the couch. It’s a bloody weeknight over here!”

The reality for Mark and many New Zealanders who are interested in rugby league, specifically State of Origin, is that weeknight kick offs at well past 10pm mean that the diehard fans are likely going to force themselves to watch it, given the magnitude of the game which is often at stake in the three game series.

“The commentators are all chipper and awake, like it’s not an ungodly hour,” he said, visibly annoyed. “I’m sitting here trying to keep my eyes open, and they’re laughing and carrying on like it’s lunchtime.”

“Oh well, better make myself another coffee”

More to come.
