“WHAT HAVE I BEEN SAYING?”
45-year-old Dave Garrett from Taranaki has confidently informed his mates, yet again, that Beauden Barrett should have been the All Blacks’ first-five all along.
Barrett put in a calming performance at first-five against the Wallabies on the weekend, which saw the ABs win 33-13 in a relatively dominant victory.
“McKenzie’s always going to be too erratic. Great impact off the bench, sure, but he’s running around like he’s just had three Red Bulls before kickoff. Did you see how well the backline went with Beaudy at the helm from kick off? Told you Barrett should have been starting 10 all along,” proclaimed Garrett, who once played half a season of third-grade club rugby before his knee “went out”.
Damian Mckenzie had been first choice first-five for the All Blacks in their first eight tests, however many felt Barrett should have been given the reins after the departure of Richie Mo’unga.
“No wild kicks into no-man’s-land, no panicked sprints into three defenders. The man’s a Rolls Royce, pure class. He was World Player of the Year for two years in that position for good reason.
“We’ve got the End of Year tour coming up, and if they don’t start Barrett at 10, we’re in for a troubled tour. I won’t be surprised if Razor gives him all five tests with the 10 jersey.”
More to come.
